The New Year 5114

The 14th of April 2013 (Gregorian calendar) is the day of the Hindu New year. Today, Hindus celebrate the 5114th year from their Hindu solar calendar! (waaa so far from 2013!)

Each year has a name, a signification, a symbolism, something to tell us. This year is called "VIJAYA" (sanskrit). What a beautiful name! Vijaya means victory or being victorious.

How Hindus celebrate the new year? Usually they wake up early, go the temple for praying, make a kolam at the front door of their place, visit family to give and have blessings, and cook special food.

The kolam (in Tamil language) is a form of painting that is drawn using rice powder. This tradition is from the Tamil Nadu, the south state of India. Decoration is not the only purpose of the kolam. Even though you can find many symbolism to it, the famous one is the sign of welcome to the prosperity and happiness into the house. You can make it for different events.

I wish you to be Victorious during this New year! Happy New Year 5114!
